En un ensayo para The Guardian, Bárbara Ellen nos comenta que ella también ha tenido esos prejuicios con los singles a los que incluso ha llegado a temer por pensar que eran personas raras con problemas, y relata haber experimentado sentimientos de miedo o compasión por los singles en lugar de pensar que a la gente en realidad le gusta disfrutar de su tiempo en soledad.
Estar single, no es necesariamente sinónimo de soledad. Single y solitari@, no es la misma cosa. La soledad elegida, es una experiencia totalmente diferente a la soledad que no es bienvenida, a una soledad impuesta.
Barbara Ellen plantea también una pregunta que todos debemos reflexionar: ¿Por qué es que la sociabilidad se considera una habilidad, mientras que la capacidad de estar solo se ve como algo raro y negativo? Ella señala:
“Personalmente, desconfío más de aquellas personas que no pueden soportar pasar el tiempo con ellos mismos”. ¿Qué pasa con ellos? ¿quizá no son capaces de dirigir su vida y necesitan esconderse entre la multitud?
